He faced 38 charges

The son of the Norwegian crown princess has been found guilty of rape and sentenced to four years in prison.

Marius Borg Høiby was found guilty on two counts of rape at Oslo District Court, although he did not appear in person, but through video link.

The 29-year-old is the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the throne in the Norwegian royal family.

He was cleared by judges on two counts of rape, but found guilty on some other charges brought against him.

Høiby faced 38 charges which included the rape of four women, assaulting and threatening a girlfriend and damaging her flat, drug charges and driving offences.

It is expected that his lawyers will appeal the verdict, calling for a shorter sentence.

The Norwegian royal family has previously emphasised that Høiby is not a public figure and has no official duties.

He is also outside the line of succession.
