Montenegro have been charged with racist behaviour by Uefa following the abuse supporters directed at some of England's players in the Euro 2020 qualifier in Podgorica on Monday night.
The 5-1 win for England's side was marred by racist chanting from some sections of the crowd, with players including Danny Rose on the receiving end. Though Montenegro boss Ljubisa Tumbakovic denied hearing the chants after the game, Uefa have now opened disciplinary proceedings with one charge for 'racist behaviour'. European football's governing body will look at the case on May 16, with Raheem Sterling, scorer of England's final goal in the game, already urging them to take stronger action against those found guilty of racist abuse. Speaking after the game, England manager Gareth Southgate said he "definitely" heard Montenegrin supporters racially abusing Rose after the Tottenham player received a late booking. "There's no doubt in my mind it happened," he said in his post-match interview. "I know what I heard. It's unacceptable. "We have to make sure our players feel supported, they know the dressing room is there and we as a group of staff are there for them. "We have to report it through the correct channels. It is clear that so many people have heard it and we have to continue to make strides in our country and trust the authorities to take the right action."World Cup 2026 prize money: The staggering amount the winners can earn revealed
