Kyle Walker sends emotional message to nation after World Cup exit

Kyle Walker has a message for the country

England were eliminated from the World Cup on Wednesday after a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Croatia in Moscow. Gareth Southgate's side took the lead early on, and could have scored more in the first half, but ultimately failed to contend with the momentum of the Croatians as the game entered its pivotal stages. On the final whistle the devastation among the players was palpable. There were tears, steely gazes into space and comforting from both England staff and friends and family. This is an England team which has inspired a level of belief and excitement among the country's population which hasn't been seen in more than 20 years, and it has not gone unnoticed among the squad. In a message posted on social media this morning, the Manchester City defender said that he had received many videos and photographs from supporters back in England, and revealed how - just like back in England - it had united the squad more and more. Walker also urged the country - in such divisive times - to come together and keep the feeling going. He said:

"I’m still heartbroken and never felt so gutted. But there’s something I want to say. This past month, I’ve seen videos going around, photos been sent to me. That felt so good for us here in Russia, and united us more and more, just like it did in our country. We might live in a time where sometimes it’s easier to be negative than positive, or to divide than to unite, but England: let’s keep this unity alive. I love you."
