But two weeks hadn't even passed before the UFC made the decision to strip the Irishman of the latter, as they promoted his Brazilian rival Jose Aldo to undisputed world featherweight champion.
That move was made so that Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis could fight for the division's interim strap, which Holloway claimed via TKO earlier this month.
So there are now two belts at 145lbs and McGregor holds neither of them and, in fact, he's been removed from the featherweight rankings entirely but he's not all that concerned about the shake-up as he remains adamant that he's still a two-weight world champion.
Ahead of his acceptance speech for the RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year award, McGregor spoke with reporter Clare McNamara and he made that quite clear when he was introduced as the UFC lightweight champion.

"Hold on... Now, now. UFC lightweight and UFC featherweight world champion. Let's get it right," McGregor clarified.
McGregor had previously said that it would require an army for the organisation to take away one of his hard-earned titles and he still carries around both belts proudly.
"Don't mind that!" McGregor continued when asked about the UFC's stance that he's no longer the featherweight title-holder.
"I'm still the two-weight world champion. Make no mistake about that. They can say what they want. They can try to get phoney belts and hand them out to people that I've already destroyed.
"I mean the current champion is a guy that I KO'ed in 13 seconds. The current interim champ is a guy I destroyed as well."
