George 'Funky' Brown, the co-founder and longtime drummer of the iconic band, Kool and the Gang, has died.
Brown, who helped write such classic hits as Too Hot and Celebration, died following a battle with cancer according to a statement released by Universal Music.
Brown had retired from performing earlier this year after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
He formed the Grammy winning band way back in 1964 along with bassist Robert 'Kool' Bell, brother Ronald Bell on keyboards and Charles Smith on guitar.
The band first broke through into the limelight in the mid-70s after years of being recognised as a cult underground band.
Brown is survived by his wife, Hanh, and his five children.
Rest in peace
