Iran launched missiles at Israel last night for the first time since the ceasefire in April after promising a "painful and decisive response" to Israeli attacks on the Lebanese capital of Beirut yesterday. The missiles were all intercepted.
Israel has now retaliated to the Iranian strikes as the country cannot stand by while its citizens are "under attack", a spokesman for the Israeli embassy in London says.
Alex Gandler said the US understands the position Israel is in and the relationship between the two countries to be "good" after Trump reportedly urged Israel to show restraint.
"We both know that Israel cannot stand on the side while its citizens are under attack. And I think our ... American partners, also understand that the relationship is good and will continue to be good."
Gandler further rejected Iran's claims that Israel had repeatedly breached the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon since 16 April by striking the country.
The strikes marked Iran’s first attacks on Israel since the US and Iran agreed to a pause in hostilities on 8 April.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps says it targeted two Israeli air bases in Nevatim and Tel Nof with recent missile attacks, according to state media.
It says it is "ready to carry out operations on all fronts" and that responses have been planned "based on various enemy scenarios," per Sky News.
The IRGC says the operation against Israel "is not a passing event, but rather the beginning of a full week of continuous strikes".
In a statement, it adds: "Waves of missiles and drones will continue to be launched around the clock for the next seven days until the enemy is deterred and ceases its crimes.
"Any targeting of Iranian territory will be met with a devastating and overwhelming response beyond all expectations," it adds.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, posted a photo of the flags of the Islamic Republic and Lebanon on X shortly after the start of the attacks.
