Top of the tree was Edinburgh, one of four Scottish areas ranked among the best places to live, climbing from 98th spot in 2014.
Last year's number one - Solihull in the West Midlands - came a close second, with Hertfordshire rounding out the top three.
Northern Ireland did not come out of the index well, with three parts of the country featuring among the 10 worst places in the UK.
