Basketball star Angel Reese has divided opinion after saying her $74,000 (£57,000) WNBA salary isn’t enough to cover her $8,000-a-month (£6,000) rent.
Reese, who currently plays for Chicago Sky, a team currently sitting 10th in the WNBA standings, took to Instagram to reveal the amount of money she earns.
In the live video, the 6ft3 star, nicknamed the ‘Bayou Barbie’ admitted she is ‘living beyond her means’ as she calculated that her salary doesn’t cover her rent.
She said: “I just hope y'all know, the WNBA doesn't pay my bills at all. I don't even think that pays one of my bills. Literally.”
The 22-year-old did the maths on the video, declaring that she gets paid $74,000 a year and that she pays $8,000 rent each month.
Though some fans said she deserves to get paid more; others told the sports star to move somewhere cheaper.
Taking to X, one fan said: “Why rent something you can’t afford?”
Another said: “I'll never understand people who live outside theirs means then complain about it.”
A third commented: “Imagine earning $74K a year and knowingly signing an $8K a month lease. This one's on her.”
But many jumped to the athlete’s defence with one claiming she needs to be paid more.
One said: “That’s crazy. WNBA players makes less than a lot of regular jobs.”
Another commented: “Angel Reese's situation shows the financial struggles many athletes face. It's concerning that her WNBA salary isn't enough to cover her high living costs.”
Some were quick to point out that the WNBA player does have other revenue streams such as endorsement deals which make her estimated net worth to be just under $2million.
Reese’s partnerships include a collaboration with Reese’s Pieces and Reebok, where she has her own line of sneakers.
