Vinicius Jr posted a 10-word message on social media following the confirmation that he had missed out on winning the Ballon d'Or.
On Monday night, the 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony was held in Paris. Ever since his Real Madrid side won the Champions League back in June, Vinicius Jr had seemingly been the heavy favourite to win the coveted France Football award.
However, yesterday afternoon reports emerged that the voting results had been leaked, and Man City midfielder Rodri was actually going to be presented with the Ballon d'Or.
This was followed by the revelation that none of the Real Madrid team, including Vinicius Jr, would be attending the ceremony.
Sure enough, Rodri was crowned the winner of the 2024 award. This came after a year that saw the midfielder play a pivotal roles in both Manchester City's winning a record-breaking 4th consecutive Premier League title and Spain being crowned European champions in the summer.
Brazil and Real Madrid fans were angered by the result though, and it seems like even Vinicius Jr himself was a bit miffed to miss out on the award.
Less than 25 minutes after Rodri was announced as the winner, the Brazilian forward took to social media to share his reaction.
In a post on X, he wrote: "Eu farei 10x se for preciso. Eles não estão preparados."
Translated to English, this reads: "I'll do it 10x if I have to. They're not ready."
When George Weah announced the winner of the Ballon d'Or, shouts of "Vini" could be heard from the crowd, the Independent reports.
Meanwhile, one of his Real Madrid teammates, Eduardo Camavinga, has seemingly implied Vinicius Jr missing out on the award was to do with "politics."
He wrote the words "FOOTBALL POLITICS" followed by a red cross emoji in a post on X.
"My brother you are the best player in the world and no award can say otherwise. Love you my bro," he added.
Real Madrid were widely criticised on social media for their decision to effectively boycott the Ballon d'Or, accusing them of being disrespectful.
One person wrote: "I just wonder how disrespected Rodri, Spain, and Manchester City feel about Real Madrid deciding not to attend the ceremony, out of pure childishness."
Another said: "We had never seen so many footballers publicly disrespecting a colleague like we are seeing these Real Madrid players do with Rodri, beyond pathetic."
And Sky Sports reporter Dougie Critchley commented: "Real Madrid’s behaviour tonight has been pretty embarrassing. A club of that stature, 15-time European Champions, with a joint record 12 Ballon D’Or wins for 8 different players… Throwing its toys out the pram because a world class player won an award ahead of another."
