Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice to Jose Mourinho will resonate with all Mancunians

Jose Mourinho has made his first official press appearance as Manchester United manager, and he said he is already grateful for the wisdom of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Portuguese told the media that he wasn't interested in deploying Wayne Rooney as anything other than a forward - the United captain had been played in a midfield role for England's woeful Euro 2016 campaign - and couldn't get through the conference without taking a not-at-all subtle dig at Arsene Wenger. He was also asked if Ferguson had given him any advice regarding his new job at England's biggest club, and we're pretty sure anyone from Manchester can vouch for what the 74-year-old Scotsman passed on.

"He told me to bring the umbrella and yesterday I couldn’t believe it was raining at the training ground," he said. "It was great advice. "The second one was to bring my typical bottle of wine because now we will have many occasions to be together. "He will always be welcome to the training ground and we will have a lot of time to share a lot of our personal stuff. His opinion is an important opinion for me."

Manchester is famously dubbed Britain's 'Rainy City', a title it rarely fails to live up to in the long winter months. Mourinho also told the press that Sir Alex was still on holiday at the European Championships in France, but he was looking forward to meeting up on his return.
