Mr. Cox will attend a charity match to raise money for his recovery
Liverpool supporter Sean Cox will leave hospital for the first time to attend a charity match in his honour at Dublin's Aviva Stadium. The charity match between Liverpool and Irish legends aims to raise funds for Mr. Cox's rehabilitation fund.
During a recent interview with Newstalk's Susan Keogh, Mr Cox's friend, Stephen Felle, revealed that the 53-year-old father of three will be in attendance at the match.
Almost a year ago, Mr.Cox was brutally attacked outside Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League semi final against AS Roma.
Following the attack, Mr. Cox spent five weeks in a specialist neurological unit in Liverpool. He was then transferred by air ambulance to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
At present, he's in the care of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.
However, it appears that Mr. Cox will be heading along to see his beloved Liverpool play at the Aviva.
Mr. Felle said: “We’re delighted to say that Seán is going to be there in person. It’s going to be Seán Cox’s first move outside a medical environment in almost 12 months, so it’s very special for the family, and it’s very emotional for [his wife] Martina.”
With regards to Sean's general mood, Mr. Felle said that his friend is in good spirits and that he's very aware of the support that he's receiving.
“She said he does [know he’s going]... she said he does, and he’s excited… he keeps smiling, and he can’t wait. It has taken a lot of planning. He is obviously medically dependent, and in terms of the logistics of getting him to there and making sure he’s properly cared for when in the stadium have taken some work.
However, there's a note of caution surrounding Sean's appearance at the charity match because it's still very much dependent on his health between now and Friday.
“The caveat is if Séan got an infection or a cold or something happens between now and Friday, we might have to change the plan. But as we sit here now… that’s the plan," said Mr. Felle.
Here's hoping that Mr. Cox is healthy enough to attend the game; he's certain to receive a rapturous applause from those in attendance.
