An Olympian has slammed the quality of the medals after noticing the deterioration of his bronze medal just a week after winning it.
Nyjah Huston came third in the men’s street skateboard competition at the Paris Games, picking up his first Olympic medal.
Japan’s Yuto Horigome won gold in the event while Huston’s compatriot Jagger Eaton picked up the silver.
However, in an Instagram video he said the medal was already chipped and had started to lose its colour.
He said: “Alright, so these Olympic medals look great when they’re brand new, but after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and letting my friends wear it over the weekend...”
He zoomed in on the medal to show its condition.
“They’re apparently not as high quality as you’d think… it’s looking rough… I don’t know, Olympic medals, we gotta step up the quality a little bit.”
In another post he said the medal looked like it ‘went to war and back’.
Huston’s followers responded to the video with one commenting: “That is just sad that the quality of the medals is not any better than that. After the hard work these athletes put in over years to try and win at the Olympics, they deserve better.”
Meanwhile, another commented that their dad’s track and golf medals from 94 are in better condition.
The medals were designed by Paris jewellery house Chaumetand and made by the Paris Mint. Each one contains a piece of recycled scrap metal from the Eiffel Tower.
29-year-old Huston is a 12-time gold medallist at the X Games and is a six-time World Champion.
