Sunday's Turkish Super Lig. game between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor was marred by ugly scenes which saw the Trabzonspor fans try and attack the opposition players.
Michy Batshuayi scored a later winner as Fenerbahce claimed a 3-2 victory, prompting an angry response from the home fans who threw objects at the forward.
At full time, dozens ran onto the pitch as the away side celebrated the win, starting the chaos that followed.
Fenerbahce's players initially tried to stand their ground before fleeing down the tunnel as security struggled to hold back the Trabzonspor fans.
Footage of the Fenerbahce players fighting back went viral, with one video of former Chelsea striker Batshuayi unleashing a spinning kick one of the supporters while his teammate Bright Osayi-Samuel was caught punching one fan.
Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reacted to the violence on X, saying: "Above all, sport is gentlemanship.
"It is never acceptable for violence to take place on football pitches.
"An investigation has been initiated immediately to identify the spectators who entered the pitch and to investigate the incidents that took place at the end of the match."
Gianni Infantino also waded in on the conversation and has called for action to be taken.
"The violence witnessed after the Turkish Super Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce is absolutely unacceptable - on or off the field, it has no place in our society," he said on social media.
"I have said it before and I will say it again - without exception, in football, all players have to be safe and secure to play the game which brings such joy to so many people all over the world.
"I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels and for the perpetrators of the shocking events in Trabzon to be held accountable for their actions."
