Joe Hart set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur on free transfer

His contract at Burnley ran out this summer

Joe Hart is set to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer after his two year contract at Burnley was not renewed, according to the Telegraph. The 33-year-old will undergo a medical at Tottenham this week as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad depth ahead of a long, Europa League filled season. The former England and Manchester City number one has struggled for form since 2016, when he was loaned to Torino and then West Ham, but failed to impress at either claret club. Burnley was the same, where he could not take Nick Pope's spot in the starting XI. Hart has previously spoken about finding a club where he will play a substantial number of games as his top priority. But given his age and the deflating nature of the transfer market, his options were limited. Celtic are understood to have wanted to bring him north of the border, but instead went for Vasilios Barkas from AEK Athens. At Spurs, Hart will compete with Paulo Gazzaniga to be back-up to Hugo Lloris after Michel Vorm's departure. Gazzaniga has performed well when called upon but it's possible Mourinho will prefer Hart's experience in Europa League games. It will be a gruelling season for Tottenham, who will be competing in four competitions with games coming thick and fast due to the relentless fixture schedule. On paper at least, there will be enough matches for them all to play. Whether they all do is another questions. Hart will be Spurs' second signing of the summer after defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg joined from Southampton for £15m.
