Isle of Man TT organisers confirm they named wrong rider as dead in crash

The organisers confirmed in a statement on Wednesday

Organisers of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races have confirmed that they mistakenly named the wrong French sidecar competitor who sadly died in a crash on Saturday. In their initial statement, as per the BBC, the organisers said that Olivier Lavorel had died in the crash on the opening lap of the first sidecar race of 2022 on the Mountain Course. However, it turned out to be Cesar Chanal who had sadly died. As a result of the crash, the race was red flagged and the rest of the day's races were abandoned. Lavorel, Chanal's passenger, currently remains in a critical condition in a hospital in Aintree, near Liverpool. "We now believe it was Cesar Chanal who died at the scene of the accident on Saturday 4th June. 'An initial identification procedure was conducted using established procedures'

A statement from the Isle of Man TT organisers confirmed they were conduct a "thorough review of the processes" in relation to the identification of the competitors. They said: "The injured competitor was treated at the roadside before being transferred to Noble's Hospital, and then airlifted to a specialist hospital in Liverpool to receive treatment. "An initial identification procedure was conducted using established procedures and would appear to have resulted in a mistaken identification. "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of both Olivier and Cesar at this truly devastating time. "We ask that people do not speculate on social media." So far, two other competitors have also died during this year's Isle of Man TT races.
