Graham Potter apparently warned the Chelsea hierarchy that they were paying over the odds for their record signing Enzo Fernandez.
Potter was in charge when the Blues decided to spend £106m on the World Cup winning midfielder after his dazzling displays for Argentina.
The fee was a British record transfer and was one of the main instigators behind Chelsea's £600m spending spree, first sparked by Real Madrid's apparent interest in the youngster.
However The Guardian have reported that Potter - who was sacked in April - had reservations about the move and told the board they were paying too much to sign him.
Additionally, the 48-year-old voiced concerns about the amount of players joining the club, something new boss Mauricio Pochettino is already trying to address, with roughly 40 first team players at his disposal.
Fernandez was one of the few players that can hold their head high in an otherwise dismal showing from the two-time European champions as they finished 12th in the Premier League, their lowest finish since 1993/94.
After the 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Sunday, Frank Lampard praised the performance of the Argentine. He said: "Enzo gets it. He gets what’s required in training. He gets what’s required to be a Chelsea player. He’s got a high talent.
"Some players just get it. I keep talking about giving players time. But when you work with someone, you understand it very quickly, and I think he gets it."
