Madrid were awarded a controversial penalty in the dying moments, shortly before Niamh Charles' 95th minute winner was wrongly disallowed.

The Women's Super League reigning champions dominated the Group D clash and were leading 2-1 after 75 minutes after Olga Carmona's 10th minute opener was cancelled out by Charles.

Sam Kerr put the Blues ahead and it looked as if Chelsea would hold on for the win only for the game to be marred by a series of contentious decisions.

Players, staff and spectators watching on were shocked when Jessie Fleming was accused of fouling Athenea del Castillo in the box only for replays to show that it was clearly out of the area. Despite protests, the spot-kick was awarded and Madrid equalised.

The drama would continue to unfold shortly after Charles' immaculate volley was ruled out for offside despite replays once again showing an incorrect call, with the Chelsea star clearly onside.

"I can't remember the last time I've been in a game like that where two humongous decisions have gone against us," Hayes said.

"The fact this is a penalty in Europe's most elite competition is a disgrace.

"We scored a legitimate goal with Niamh Charles three or four yards onside. It's embarrassing.

"I cannot understand the decision whatsoever. I think we've been robbed."
