Barcelona and Real Madrid have been banned from using the term 'El Clasico' whenever the teams meet.
Relevo reported that the famous derby, watched by millions around the world every year, will no longer be allowed to use the famous term associated when the two heavyweights clash.
A Spanish Patent and Trademark office denied a request to protect and trademark the term as they believe that there could be a risk of confusion between the trademark both clubs applied for and the one already used by LaLiga, 'ElClásico', which is already considered to be well-established.
Barça and Madrid both have a month to decide if they want to appeal the decision but if unsuccessful in any pursuit to get it overturned, it could cause huge problems from a marketing perspective when it comes to planning future games.
The famous fixture has been played all around the world, using the El Clasico title to draw in fans to come and watch and acts as a huge commercial source when it comes to selling television rights across the globe. They're set to face each other in Dallas this summer as part of their pre-season preparations.
This season alone has seen the pair meet six times in all competitions (twice in LaLiga, twice in the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and during a friendly in Las Vegas).
It comes while both Spanish giants are both involved in confrontation with LaLiga president Javier Tebas over their continued support to join breakaway competition: The European Super League.
