A historic first victory has been claimed by Mozambique in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as they overcame Gabon 3-2 on Sunday, while a narrow win over Burkina Faso means Algeria have booked their place in the last 16 of the tournament.
African giants Cameroon and Ivory Coast drew 1-1 on the same day, while Sudan saw off Equatorial Guinea 1-0.
Mozambique were beaten by Ivory Coast in their AFCON opener, but managed to score twice in the first half in their last Group F game.
Before the break, Gabon pulled one back through former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Mozambique restored the two-goal cushion through Diogo Calila.
Gabon pulled one back once more but Mozambique’s third goal meant it was enough to seal the country’s first win in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Elsewhere in Group F, on Sunday’s heavyweight clash, defending champions Ivory Coast took a lead that lasted only five minutes before Cameroon found their equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw.
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo opened the scoring in the 51st minute for Ivory Coast, scoring for a second successive game, but it was Stoke City’s full-back Junior Tchamadeu who levelled for Cameroon with the help of a deflection five minutes later.
The lead in Group F is now shared by Cameroon and Ivory Coast with four points each, followed by Mozambique on three points.
In Group E, Algeria secured their place in the last 16 thanks to a penalty from ex-Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez that gave them a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso.
The penalty which turned out to be the game’s decider was awarded after a foul on Man City’s Rayan Ait-Nouri.
This was the ninth goal at AFCON for the former Leicester City and Manchester City winger - who is appearing at his sixth Africa Cup of Nations - a record for Algeria.
Algeria, who won the competition in 1990 and in 2019, have the maximum six points and are yet to concede a goal in their group, living up to their tournament favourites status.
Four AFCON matches will take place on Monday (29 December), as hosts Morocco face Zambia and Comoros meet Mali in Group A.
In Group B, leaders Egypt face Angola while South Africa, currently on second place, face Zimbabwe who sit bottom of the group with only one point.
