A Tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Japan.
The alert comes after an earthquake was detected near the northeastern regions of Aomori and Hokkaido, as per the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Warnings of waves up to three metres high have been issued.
The earthquake of 7.6 magnitude was recorded by the United States Geological Survey.
Sky News says that a magnitude of that strength is considered a rare occurrence and "signifies a major to great earthquake, capable of causing serious damage over large areas, significant destruction and loss of life."
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has said that "hazardous" tsunami waves could be possible within 1,000km of the epicentre along the coasts of Japan and Russia.
The epicentre is reported to have been around 80km off the coast of Japan.
Public broadcaster in Japan NHK has reported that nuclear power plants in the regions concerned are conducting safety checks.
Metro reported that locals have been warned to evacuate as quickly as possible.
