DJ Tim Westwood accused of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, documentary set to reveal

Seven women have come forward as part of an investigation into the DJ

Former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood is facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct by a number of women. The DJ is accused of abusing his position in the music industry to exploit women and is accused of predatory and unwanted sexual behaviour and touching between 1992 and 2017. Both the BBC and the Guardian have heard detailed accounts from seven Black women who claim they were abused by the 64-year-old in their late teens and early 20s. He denies the allegations, with a spokesperson for Westwood saying they are completely false and denied in their entirety. A documentary detailing the investigation and allegations entitled Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power, will air on BBC Three at 9pm on Tuesday, April 26. Three of the women accuse Westwood of opportunistic and predatory sexual behaviour, with the other four alleging that he groped them at events. The women say they all met Westwood through work. None of them know each other and their names will be changed in the documentary to protect their identities, with some of them working within the music industry and fearing repercussions for coming forward with the allegations. None of the women had reported their interactions with Westwood to the police, fearing that their accounts would not be taken seriously because they were so young and that racial discrimination would also cause them to be ignored. Anonymous allegations of inappropriate behaviour from Westwood towards young Black women emerged on social media in June 2020 and it was after this that the women decided to come forward with their experiences. In a statement to the MailOnline at the time, Westwood said these allegations were "fabricated" and without foundation. Two of the women from the joint BBC and Guardian investigation say they agreed to meet Westwood in London to discuss music as they were aspiring to work in the industry. They claim the DJ drove them to a flat and initiated unwanted and unexpected sex. One of the women was 19 at the time, while Westwood was 53. Another woman claims she met Westwood when she was 17 and in an R&B group. She says she was subjected to unwanted oral sex after agreeing to meet with him. He was in his mid-30s at the time. The four other women claim he groped them while they had a picture taken with him after one of his performances at a nightclub. Lawyers for Westwood told the Guardian: “Any suggestion that he acts, or has acted, in the way described would be false and seriously defamatory.” The DJ currently hosts a show on Capital Xtra and regularly performs at nightclubs and other events.
