The Team GB athletes to watch today

It's another action-packed day

Today did not get off to the best of starts for Olympic organisers or Team GB as the triathlon was postponed.

Team GB have enjoyed success in this event in recent years and had hoped to medal in the event today.

It is unclear how this postponement will affect them and when it will go ahead instead. There is talk that the swimming element may be dropped completely if the Seine can not be cleaned up.

There are still 13 gold medals on offer today, with the women’s team gymnastics final expected to be the most watched event worldwide later today.

Team GB have qualified for that final, but all eyes will be on the United States and the return of Simone Biles who look nailed on for the gold.

GB’s Becky Downie is an experienced gymnast though, competing at her third Olympics and she will be hoping to steer her team towards a podium finish. That gets underway at 5.15pm.

Before that though, Matthew Coward-Holley will hope to upgrade his bronze in Tokyo as he looks for success in the men’s trap final of the shooting at 2.30pm.

Team GB have been out on the water this morning in the rowing with Mathilda Hodgkins Byrne and Rebecca Wilde qualifying for the final of the double skulls.

Sam Sills is in action in the men’s windsurfing at 11.30 with Emma Wilson in action later on this afternoon.

Sticking with the water sports, Matt Richards was back in the pool after winning silver last night and has qualified for the semi-final of the 100m freestyle event and Aanna Hopkins will try to qualify in the women’s event later today.

So far this Olympics there has been disappointment for GB in the combat sports but this morning, Lucy Renshall beat Australian Katharina Haecker in the first round of the -63kg Judo.

Later today the men’s hockey team will face top ranked side, the Netherlands in what is sure to be a fantastic match between the two.

As that gets underway, Charlotte Worthington will begin her campaign to defend her Olympic title in the BMX freestyle qualifiers at 1pm. Keirin Reilly will go in the men’s event later in the afternoon.

GB have experienced plenty of success so far in the canoe slalom event picking up a bronze and silver medal. It will be Joe Clarke’s turn today as he goes in the K1 event with heats starting at 3pm.

He won gold in Rio but was left out of the squad for Tokyo, can he make a triumphant return to the Olympics?

One of the big ‘ones-to-watch’ today will be Andy Murray and Dan Evans who are seeking a place in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles.

If he loses, this will be his last tennis match but he is hoping to prolong his career as long as possible in this, his final tournament.
