Sherlock co-creator ‘would like to make a film’ of hit series

There's been rumours of a revival for years.

Between Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott, the show was a platform for some massive acting talent that went on to become Hollywood stars in their own right.

It will be great news to fans of the show, then, to hear that co-creator Mark Gatiss is still open to the idea of bringing back Sherlock in movie form.

Speaking to Deadline over the weekend, Gatiss said, "We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult. We'll see.

"You’ll have to ask Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman]," he added.

While it is in no way a definitive answer, the fact Gatiss, and presumably his other creator half Steven Moffat, are interested in reigniting the Sherlock story is enough to get fans excited.

Airing on the BBC for the first time in 2010, Sherlock ran for four full seasons and one special in 2016.

The show starred Cumberbatch as the famous detective based on the character created by Arthur Conan Doyle, but set in the modern world.

Alongside any Sherlock worth his salt was his faithful assistant Watson, played by Freeman.

While the first two seasons received critical acclaim, the latter seasons were met with mixed responses, with the fourth in particular disappointing fans and critics alike.

However, the show is still considered one of the best BBC productions of the last few decades and still has a dedicated fan base to this day.

Last year, Freeman refused to rule out a return to the show, telling Jonathan Ross on his chat show that "there's never a completely shut door."

He continued by saying, "personally I'm a fan of things being finite. But I'm also a sucker for a good idea and a good script and if something comes up that persuades us all then my door would always be open."

Cumberbatch has also said he was keen to keep revisiting the show at some point in the future.

Gattis and Moffat have since teamed up once again to create the 2020 BBC miniseries Dracula, which received positive reviews upon its release.
