Depp was dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after allegations from ex-wife Amber Heard
One of the stars from the
Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise has said that he believes Johnny Depp should be allowed to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Following controversy with his ex-wife Amber Heard, who made allegations saying that the actor was abusive and that the pair were involved in a toxic relationship, Depp was dropped from the franchise.
However actor Kevin McNally, who played Mr Gibbs in the films, believes that Depp should return to the franchise, saying that "without Jack [Sparrow] there is no Pirates franchise."
Speaking to the
Daily Express, McNally said: "I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being. I don't see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow.
"I think there was a general feeling that without Jack there is no Pirates franchise. And there's probably a lot of truth in that.
"But now there have been questions about that, certainly why not have other Pirate films and certainly then why not have Jack back or Jack playing a different part."
Depp has appeared as the main character in all five
Pirates of the Caribbean films so far but will not be featuring in the upcoming sixth instalment, which will have a mainly female-led cast with plans to go in a different direction in the absence of Jack Sparrow.
The star was dumped from the franchise in 2018, with Disney's production chief, Sean Bailey, explaining how they wanted to "bring in a new energy and vitality" to the series.
This was after Heard made allegations in 2016 that Depp had domestically abused her. Depp denied these allegations with the case being settled later that year.
However in 2020, the case was thrown back into the spotlight when the actor launched a libel case against
The Sun newspaper and executive editor Dan Wootton. This was over whether an article published in the paper in which Depp was labelled a "wife beater" was libellous or not.
He eventually lost the case and following this was also dropped from the
Fantastic Beasts franchise.
