Newcastle United are reportedly set to stop paying Sandro Tonali's wages and are threatening legal action against his former club, AC Milan.
Corriere dello Sport, via Mail Sport, are claiming that the Magpies have warned the Italian giants that they may sue them in a multi-million pound lawsuit.
Tonali is set to be banned from all football-related activities for 10 months for illegally betting on football - which would rule him out for the remainder of the season.
He admitted to betting on his own teams to win matches, including when he was at Milan, while the 23-year-old's agent said that Tonali is a gambling addict.
The alleged impending ban comes only four months after Tonali made the £52m move from AC Milan to the north east.
As well as the suspension, his current employers are now set to stop paying the Italy international in the latest twist in the scandal that has rocked football across Italy and the rest of Europe.
Juventus' Nicolo Fagioli received a seven-month ban last week for also betting illegally however the Bianconeri have said that they will continue to pay his wages and will allow him to carry on training with the first team.
Eddie Howe meanwhile has promised that Newcastle would "throw our arms around" to "protect" the 23-year-old.
It's unclear if Tonali will feature in the Magpies' Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund tonight (Wednesday).
