At least five people have been killed following a stabbing spree in a shopping centre in Sydney.
The BBC report that the perpetrator has been shot dead by police, after many people were stabbed, including a nine-month-old baby.
The man entered the shopping centre shortly before 16:00 local time (7am BST) and a major incident was declared shortly afterwards.
The incident remains ongoing and people have been told to avoid the area.
The Sydney Morning Herald report that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has received a briefing from federal police on the Bondi Junction attack.
He said on X: “Tragically, multiple casualties have been reported and the first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones.
"Our hearts go out to those injured and we offer our thanks to those caring for them as well as our brave police officers and first responders."
In a press conference delivered just moments ago, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said that they believe the perpetrator acted alone and confronted multiple people in the shopping centre before stabbing them.
Five people have been confirmed dead and many others are in serious and/or critical condition in hospital.
A female police officer was able to catch up to the attacker who, upon seeing the police officer, approached her with a knife, after which she drew her weapon and shot him, killing him.
The officer has been hailed a hero and is believed to have saved many lives.
