A beloved McDonald’s sandwich is causing the company trouble, after four people complained that the McRib doesn’t contain any real pork meat.
The popular food chain is now facing a class action lawsuit, after a federal complaint that was filed just before Christmas.
McDonald’s marketing of the McRib was cited as misleading in the federal complaint that was filed on December 23 by Peter Le, Charles Lynch, Dorien Baker and Derrick Wilson.
The people who brought the case against McDonald’s claim that the name and presentation of the sandwich lead customers to believe that it actually uses real pork rib meat, which they say is not the case.
The complaint stated that “by including the word ‘Rib’ in the name of the McRib, as well as by going out of its way to shape the sandwich’s patty into the shape of a pork rib, McDonald’s knows or should know that consumers are so misled.”
According to the complaint, the popular sandwich contains lower-quality cuts of pork including pork shoulder, heart, tripe and scalded stomach.
The Independent reported that the compliant also cited 16 legal claims against McDonald’s and they include fraud, breach of warranty, contract violations, and violations of state consumer protection laws.
But the item, which is limited-time and was first introduced in 1982, uses “100 percent” boneless pork, according to a statement by McDonald’s.
McDonald’s said that “this lawsuit distorts the facts and many of the claims are inaccurate. Food quality and safety are at the heart of everything we do – that’s why we’re committed to using real, quality ingredients across our entire menu.”
“Our fan-favorite McRib sandwich is made with 100 percent pork sourced from farmers and suppliers across the U.S. We’ve always been transparent about our ingredients so guests can make the right choice for them”, it added.
As reported by CBS News, the chain added that it does not use pork hearts, tripe, or scalded stomach in the McRib patty, and those items aren't allowed in any of its pork products.
