Man’s neighbours p*ss him off so he builds house next door out of spite

He has since sold the property

Real estate developer Ryan Wetherhold and John Atkins, owned an awkwardly shaped plot of land in Jacksonville Beach which he refused to sell despite his neighbours repeated calls for him to do so.

Instead, he decided to build the 10ft x 19ft house 'out of spite'. He said the public outcry had fuelled him to construct whatever he could get away with legally.

In an interview last year, Wetherhold said: "We wouldn’t have been down this path had there been a bit more back and forth. When people say, ‘You can’t do it, you can’t do it’, [Atkins] is like, ‘I’m going to do it in spite of you telling me I can’t do it’."

He has now sold the property for $619,000.

Mike Cavanagh, 51, was looking to downsize after his kids moved out, and after touring this odd home, he instantly knew that it was right for him.

He told Business Insider: "The home is 10 feet wide and 1,547 square feet, with two bedrooms and 2½ baths. Despite its narrow layout, the exterior has great curb appeal.

"Inside, it has a modern feel, with beautiful flooring and tile work throughout. The same day I toured the home, I made an offer. It was accepted, and we closed in just 30 days. I purchased it in early June for just over $600,000."

Though neighbours thought Cavanagh may turn the home into an Air B&B he has decided to live in the property as he has a job in the area and the house is now his only property.

It is not the first time a property has been built out of spite in America; a 10ft-wide house was built in Alameda, California after the city commandeered some land to build a road.

Meanwhile, in Seattle there is a tiny pie-shaped house that people claim was built by a divorcee whose settlement left her with only the front yard.
