United drew 1-1 at the Gtech but can count themselves lucky after Brentford peppered keeper - Andre Onana - for much of the game. Onana performed admirably and described the game as a 'cup final' when speaking to Sky Sports, ahead of kick-off.
Besides a few speculative efforts, United were on the back foot for large parts of the game. However, Mason Mount thought he had snatched victory in stoppage time in what Alan Smith described as 'The biggest smash and grab I've seen all season, or any seasons recently!'
Brentford went straight up the other end and equalised through Kristoffer Ajer to send the supporters into raptures.
Thomas Frank's side played brilliantly and did everything but win the game. A point was the least they deserved.
At half-time Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Redknapp, expressed his bemusement at the United display, he said: "I'm watching Marcus Rashford; he's walking round like he's having fun. It's the Premier League... I'm amazed how poor United have been."
Brentford went closest in the first half through Ivan Toney, who found himself one-on-one with Onana before striking the ball against the post.
With 20 minutes left Brentford had the ball in the net thanks to Toney again, he volleyed Bryan Mbeumo's lofted ball past the sprawling United keeper but the linesman's flag was up. VAR then confirmed the on-field decision.
The Londoners peppered United's goal with chance after chance. They recorded 31 shots with five on target, not to mention hitting the woodwork three times. On the other hand, the away side had 11 attempts with five on target mostly coming from ambitious long-range efforts.
Erik ten Hag's side looked a different team to the side that defeated Liverpool two weeks ago. Tonight they looked bereft of ideas and uninspired both in attack and defence.
The draw leaves United in sixth place eight points behind Spurs and 11 behind fourth-placed Aston Villa. Both Villa and Spurs were victorious on Saturday afternoon bolstering their hopes for a UEFA Champions League place.
Ten Hag's side travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on Thursday evening.
