Man, 28, charged with murder of healthcare CEO in New York

He was recognised by a customer in McDonald's

Luigi Mangione was arrested by police at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania on Monday after a customer at the fast-food outlet recognised him.

On his arrest, he was found in possession of a gun and a handwritten document that police said indicated "motivation and mindset."

He was charged with murder and four other counts, including firearm charges, and was denied bail.

The 28-year-old is an Ivy League graduate and comes from a prominent Maryland family, BBC News reports.

Mangione's arrest came just two days after the NYPD had released new images of him, identifying him as a person of interest in the shooting.

Last Wednesday, Brian Thompson, the CEO of medical insurance giant UnitedHealthcare, was shot on a footpath outside the Hilton hotel on Avenue of the Americas, in Manhattan, New York.

The killing, which police had said was pre-planned, sparked a huge manhunt in the city.

However, it was only on Monday that investigators were able to track him after a customer in a McDonald's in Altoona - some 280 miles west of New York City - recognised him from media coverage. They then told an employee, who tipped off police.

Mangione showed police a fake New Jersey driver's licence with the name Mark Rosario on.

When asked if he had been to New York recently, he "became quiet and started to shake," according to court documents.

Along with a gun containing six rounds of 9mm ammunition, prosecutors said Mangione had been carrying a US passport and $10,000 cash, $2,000 of it in foreign currency.

He appeared in court on Monday, handcuffed at the wrists and ankles, and wearing jeans and a dark blue jersey.

Mangione was subsequently charged with murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm.
