Major change to driving licences to affect 50 million Brits this year

An important one to remember.

A new government app will be launched that allows drivers to use it as a digital driving licence and official ID.

The digital license will be part of the Gov.uk App and Wallet, which allows motorists to access documents and important details like the licence, MOT dates and benefits payments.

It can also be used as an official ID in supermarkets and online.

The switch to digital was announced back in January, with changes expected later this year.

However, some elements of the digital wallet will be up and running this summer.

The first to get access to the app will be veterans, who can use the gov.uk wallet for the digital veteran card.

An "early version" of the digital driving licence will follow, but a date has not been set

A DSIT spokesperson said: "The GOV.UK Wallet will be launched this summer with the first credential being a digital Veteran card.

“Later in the year, we plan to begin rolling out a digital driving licence, which will eventually be usable for everything your paper licence is currently used for. We’re working closely with DVLA and industry to meet this timeline.

“There are no plans to make the GOV.UK Wallet, or digitised documents mandatory, and physical documents will remain an option for those who prefer them.”

Motorists will not be forced to get rid of their physical licences, as the digital one will be optional.
