iPhone owners told to upgrade their device before September

It's ahead of the iOS 17 rollout

The iPhone 8 and iPhone X, both released in 2017, will not support iOS 17. Tech experts are therefore urging people with these models to sell them or trade them in before the next upgrade.

According to research from SellCell, the value of both of these are likely to plummet and leave their owners at risk of a number of security issues.

Their report reads: "Neither the iPhone X or the iPhone 8 will receive the iOS 17 update, which means the phones won’t get security updates either,' the report reads.

"Owners and their data are more at risk of attack by people with malicious intent, like hackers, for example.

"These models will become obsolete once the new iOS version rolls out to the public."

You can currently get £110 in trade-in credit for an iPhone X towards a new device, and £60 for an iPhone 8.

When iOS 16 was launched last year, the value of the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 6S Plus - the newest models incompatible with the operating system - fell dramatically.

On average, the value of iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 6S Plus ranges fell by just under 43 percent by the time iOS 16 rolled out,

When the iPhone X launched in 2017 it cost $999 (£785), and was the first model to have Facial ID instead of Touch ID.

It was labelled the "biggest leap forward since the original iPhone" at the time. The device featured an edgeless display, the first Apple OLED display, glass on the front and back and a band of surgical-grade stainless steel around the edge of the display.

The same year,  86.3 million iPhone 8 and 8 Plus handsets were sold worldwide.

The X and the 8/8 Plus were discontinued in February 2020, and with the launch of iOS 17 next month, it looks like the end for them.

Apple's new operating system is set to introduce a raft of new security features, including improvements to Safari Private Browsing and child safety protection measures.

It will also include a new 'StandBy' mode, which will effectively turn your device into a bedside clock as it charges, and a highly-anticipated update to autocorrect.
