One of the producers of I Am Legend 2 has confirmed the film will be a direct sequel to the original film, and will star Will Smith.
The original 2007 zombie horror, directed by Francis Lawrence, follows Smith as Robert Neville, a US Army virologist and the last surviving human New Yorker who spends his days trying to find a cure for a virus that wiped out humanity.
In March 2022, a sequel was officially announced, but very few details were given about the storyline.
If you've watched the film, you'll know that - spoilers - Smith’s character sacrifices himself to rescue fellow survivors Ethan and Anna, handing them a cure for the virus as he fends off the mutant swarms.
This has left many wondering just how Robert Neville could appear in the film.
Now, Akiva Goldsman, who is a producer and writer on I Am Legend 2, has shed some light on the sequel.
She explained that the film will follow-on from the original's alternate ending, which was included in its DVD extras.
In this ending, realises that the mutants are actually rescuing the being he’d experimented on, and he and the mutants end things amicably allowing him to leave in peace.
During an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldsman said: “We’re sequelizing the alternative cut. Where Will lives and things don’t go well for humanity.”
“The world returns in a way that is kind of spectacular – an exciting playground for all of us – not your father’s I Am Legend."
Alongside Smith, I Am Legend 2 will also star Michael B. Jordan, who told People last month that he was "really excited to get in front of the camera with him [Smith].”
As of yet, the film does not have a release date.
