Former English international John Fashanu has sued police for £100,000 following his arrest on suspicion of several crimes in Nigeria, which is where he lives.
The 62-year-old has been accused of several charges including criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespassing, and obtaining by false pretence.
Fashanu denies the charges and is now suing the police for compensation, claiming his rights were violated following his arrest, as well as his wife Vivian and their lawyers.
The charges being made against him stem from a land dispute - involving a group of investors in the country.
The former Gladiator says that the workers were accompanied by police and he and his lawyer were then arrested after co-operating and travelling to the local police station.
This occurred on December 16th, with Fashanu now suing after he was subjected to "arrest, detention and inhuman treatment" for "about three hours."
Fashanu added that police violated their duties with “subsequent intermittent constraints of his personal liberty", adding that a“gross unconstitutional violation” has taken place.
It was confirmed by his lawyer Mr Chigbu, that he and both of the Fashanus have been released on pail.
Mr Chigbu said: "All three have perfected their bail conditions. They have all met the requirements to be admitted on administrative bail by police."
Fashanu played for several English clubs from the late 70s to early 90s, including Norwich City, Wimbledon and Aston Villa.
He is best known for playing a major role in in Wimbledon's historic 1988 FA Cup win over Liverpool.
He won two caps for England during his career.
Fashanu claims the charges arose following the investors agreeing to pay over £500,000 for his 22-acre plot, with the ex-Aston Villa striker being arrested after investigated the contractors building a fence on his land, according to The Mirror.
