US president Donald Trump has addressed his predecessor Joe Biden's prostate cancer diagnosis for the first time.
The 82-year-old's severe health situation was announced by a spokesperson yesterday (May 18) after doctors discovered a small swelling on Biden's prostate.
"Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms," the statement read.
"On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.
"The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians."
Via his Truth Social channel, Trump wrote in response to the news: "Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery."
Meanwhile, Biden's vice president Kamala Harris described her ex-boss as a "fighter" on Instagram.
"Doug [Emhoff] and I are saddened to learn of President Biden's prostate cancer diagnosis," she wrote.
"We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time. Joe is a fighter - and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery."
UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer was another world leader who took the time to send his prayers.
"I am very sorry to hear President Biden has prostate cancer," he said. "All the very best to Joe, his wife Jill and their family, and wishing the President swift and successful treatment."
Prostate cancer is assigned a Gleason score, ranging from two to 10 and indicates the abnormality of cancer cells.
