David Tennant’s trans badge raises thousands for LGBTQ+ charity

Tennant is vocal supporter of the trans community

The actor has appeared on Channel 4's The Last Leg and the BBC's The One Show in recent days ahead of his return as the Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials.

During both TV appearances, he wore a Tardis badge in the colours of the trans Pride flag - blue, white and pink.

The badge's creator, Dr Jamie Gallagher, later took to social media to say that all profits raised from its purchases will be donated to the Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT), a charity that supports homeless LGBTQ+ people in the UK.

And on Monday, Dr Gallagher shared that more than £18,000 had been raised from the badge's sales.

He wrote on X: "This morning I sent £4,000 to @aktcharity because of this. That’s £18,129 in total. Thank you beautiful humans. That will make a huge difference to LGBTQ+ people living with homelessness this winter (I am working to fulfil orders as quickly as I can. Have added Ace & NB too.)"

He later posted about Tennant wearing the badge again on The One Show.

Tennant's wife is fellow actor Georgia Tennant, and she has also been sharing links to purchase the badges on her Instagram.

The demand for the badges has been so intense that Dr Gallagher has been forced to temporarily close the store as the orders were "not possible for one person to manage" and he needs "time to work through the hundreds of orders already received."

The Tennants have been vocal supporters of the trans community, with one of their children reportedly identifying as non-binary.

On multiple occasions, the 52-year-old has voiced his support for trans people through his fashion choices.

Earlier this year, the actor wore a Pride pin badge in the trans flag colours during an appearance on Saturday Night Takeaway.

And in July he wore a t-shirt which read "leave trans kids alone" whilst promoting Good Omens.

On Saturday (November 25), Tennant will make his eagerly-anticipated return as the Doctor in the first of three specials to celebrate the show's 60th anniversary.

The specials will also see Catherine Tate return as Donna Noble, and are the first episodes to be written by Russell T Davies since his return to the show.
