The Air Ambulance jet that crashed into a densely populated Philadelphia neighbourhood was returning a child home after life-saving medical treatment.
The Learjet 55 operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, and registered in Mexico, was destined for Tijuana in Mexico with a stop in Missouri.
The plane was departing Philadelphia where a young girl on board had been receiving life-saving treatment at Shriners Children's Philadelphia.
However, tragically the plane did not make it far out of Northeast philadelphia Airport, crashing late yesterday evening, only a short time after take-off.
The plane collided with a neighbourhood near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, killing all onboard.
Reports said multiple houses in the area had caught fire, however, the extent of the damage is unknown in full.
A spokesman for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, Shai Gold, confirmed the said news and said the young girl had fought her illness tirelessly.
Gold said: "She did her course of care. She was going home.
"She fought quite a lot to survive, and unfortunately, this tragedy on the way home."
The girl was being accompanied on board by the her mother, two pilots, a doctor and a paramedic.
All six on board have died.
The child and was able to travel from Mexico to the US, after receiving third party charity sponsorship to receive the life-saving treatment.
The hospital said: "Shriners Children's is heartbroken to confirm that one of our paediatric patients and the child's mother were aboard the Jet Rescue Air Ambulance that crashed in Philadelphia this evening.
"The patient had received care from Shriners Children's Philadelphia and was being transported back to her home country in Mexico on a contracted air ambulance when the crash happened.
"Because of patient privacy concerns, we cannot say any more about the patient and her family at this time."
This tragic crash comes just days after an regional American Airlines jet crashed in Washington DC, killing 67.
