A number of clubs have paid tribute to the 23-year-old, along with friends and family

Football clubs, friends and family have paid tribute to player and sports coach Cody Fisher, who was stabbed to death in a nightclub on Boxing Day. Police were called to The Crane nightclub on Adderley Street in Digbeth just before 11.45pm on December 26 after reports that a 23-year-old had been stabbed. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead around 30 minutes later, West Midlands Police said. On Tuesday evening, West Midlands Police confirmed that 23-year-old Cody Fisher was the victim.

In a statement, a family member said: "They have broken our hearts; I have lost my best friend. My family and I are asking for privacy and respectfulness at this heart-breaking time."

The family are being supported by specialist officers. Since the tragic news was confirmed, tributes have been pouring in for the young man, who was a non-league footballer and school sport coach. One of the clubs he played for was Stratford Town FC. The club said in a tribute on its website: "Our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of Cody Fisher.

"Our thoughts are with the you at this very difficult time.

"Cody made 54 appearance for The Bards and having started with the club in 2018."

They also tweeted their condolences to his family and friends.

In his picture released by West Midlands Police, Fisher is wearing Bromsgrove's club colours. The club tweeted: "All of us at Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cody Fisher. The Walsall FC Academy shared their their "devastation" over the death of one of their "former scholars". "We are devastated to hear this awful news," the account tweeted on Tuesday afternoon. Friend Jordan Goddard tweeted that he felt "absolutely empty" and was "heartbroken" at Fisher's death. He added: "Couldn’t wish to meet a nicer human being always smiling always good energy . I will miss you forever my brother. The school said: "Everyone is devastated today to hear of the tragic and needless death of this bright, friendly and talented young man.

"Many of the children at school know Cody as their sports coach and have enjoyed working with him."

Police have launched an investigation into Fisher's death and are appealing for witnesses.

Detectives are viewing CCTV from the nightclub and urge anyone who was in the area to get in touch.

Police believe Mr Fisher was approached by a group before being stabbed and are urging anyone in the club to get in touch.

Det Insp Michelle Thurgood, leading the investigation, said: “This was a young man enjoying himself with friends on a Boxing Day night out and our thoughts are with his friends and family today. “We know there were hundreds of people in the nightclub at the time. While we’ve spoken to a number of them already, we still need to hear from anyone who was there and who witnessed or even filmed what happened. “We believe that the victim was approached by a group of people, and was then stabbed, so we’re working hard to identify all of those involved.”
