Major restaurant chain to close their final UK store

The parent company behind Karen's Diner entered liquidation in 2024

This restaurant franchise, which was launched four years ago in Sydney, Australia, hopes to immortalise the online trend of calling somebody that always complains a 'Karen'.

Its USP (unique selling point) was that customers are taunted by staff as they settle down for some food and drink, yet many boundaries have been overstepped.

The chain's website describes it as 'an interactive diner and an absurdly fun experience'.

Addressing the London eatery's closure after just two years in operation, the owner shared (via The Caterer): "People don't understand how hard it is to run both a restaurant and a theatre simultaneously, especially in such fierce trading conditions."

"We want to thank the restaurant manager and all of his team for all of their hard work delivering great entertainment night after night," added a spokesperson.

Viral Ventures UK, Karen's Diner's parent company, entered liquidation in September 2024 after reportedly owing creditors north of £400,000.

Prior to Islington's fate was an equally unceremonious one suffered by Karen's Diner at Brighton Marina, where Sussex Police discovered that the restaurant had broken licensing and safety rules on top of drugs being found on the premises.

During a licensing check on February 2, 2024, police encountered traces of cocaine, heroin, MDMA, and ketamine in the toilets, in the kitchen, reception area, and on a customer table.

"As from Monday the 4th of March, Karen's Diner will no longer trade on The Marina. Our restaurants are intended to offer outrageously funny experiences, and never to cause offence. Clearly the restaurant has operated outside of our guidelines and this is unacceptable. We take this opportunity of thanking the thousands of people that have been brave enough to visit and we share their disappointment as we announce this closure."

Karen's Diner is now apparently driving its focus towards pop-events instead of permanent establishments.
