Prime Video has just added to its service We Were Liars, a new mystery psychological thriller adapted from the acclaimed 2014 young adult novel by E. Lockhart.
The series follows the wealthy Sinclair family, the extended members of which spend their summers each year on the idyllic Beechwood Island in New England.
The private island is owned by Harris (the great David Morse, Disturbia), the patriarch of the Sinclairs.
The show mainly focuses on Harris' teenage granddaughter, Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind, The Babysitter) and her tight-knit inner circle dubbed 'The Liars'. The group also consists of her two cousins, Johnny and Mirren (Joseph Zada and Esther McGregor), and family friend, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari).
One summer night on Beechwood, Cadence washes up on the shore, barely breathing and with a serious head injury - the trauma of which leaves her suffering from amnesia and migraines.
Unable to remember what happened to her, the teen returns to the island the following summer to get answers.
As the narrative switches between pre- and post-Cadence's injury, the question lingers: Do The Liars know more about what happened to Cadence than they are letting on?
We Were Liars boasts a great cast, which also includes Caitlin Fitzgerald (Succession), Mamie Gummer (True Detective) and Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass).
JOE has watched the first episode of the series and is happy to report that there is a lot to enjoy in the show, from its gorgeous seaside setting, to its portrait of a dysfunctional wealthy family, to the sizzling chemistry between "will they, won't they" characters Cadence and Gat.
It's these elements, along with the lingering mystery as to how Cadence wound up unconscious on the beach, that will have us tuning in for more.
And based on other reviews - many of which have compared We Were Liars to Big Little Lies, Succession and The White Lotus - and comments from people who read the novel, viewers can expect some twists throughout the rest of the episodes.
