The Walking Dead has officially ended after 12 years and 177 episodes

Despite the finale, there will be more undead-related adventures set in the show's universe.

It seems impossible but the horror series The Walking Dead has finally ended its run. Based on a comic book series of the same name, the show followed a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse. This is as they try to stay alive amid the near-constant threat of attacks from "walkers", as well as fellow human survivors with malicious intent. First premiering in 2010 to rave reviews, The Walking Dead ran for a whopping 11 seasons, comprising 177 episodes. Over the years, critical opinion of the show has ebbed and flowed as showrunners were swapped out and various cast members and characters left (who could forget T-Dog!). That said, the series has retained a loyal following throughout its run. Aptly titled 'Rest in Peace', its finale followed Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride) and the remaining other survivors assembling for one last stand against a zombie horde. Here's what some critics had to say about the last episode: "The Walking Dead was always at its best when it leaned into its comic-book roots, after all, and to its credit, the episode delivers plenty of vivid, comics-worthy action, including several huge explosions and enough shots of tearing flesh and spurting blood to temporarily make vegetarians of us all. For all of the destruction, though, there was very little actual consequence." - Variety "AMC’s zombie drama sendoff had some truly great moments, some tantalising cameos and yet it still left me feeling a little hollow and letdown." - Forbes "'Rest In Peace' might not have the energy or potency of a younger, hipper series, but there are a few surprises left in both the proverbial and literal gas tank." - Den of Geek "The closing of this chapter still was a fascinating one. It was rushed, chaotic, and, to be blunt, rather disappointing. However, even as the show is not going to be remembered as one of the best due to its precipitous decline in quality, it certainly will hold an infamous place in television history for just how long it dragged on." - Collider Fans of The Walking Dead do not have to be too upset about the show concluding as it has already had a number of spin-offs such as Fear the Walking Dead, which will be returning for its eighth season. Meanwhile, a number of further spin-offs are in development. These include The Walking Dead: Dead City, about the characters Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Daryl Dixon, about Reedus' character. There is also another untitled spin-off series in development that will focus on the characters of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). Related links:
