Netflix have confirmed that Squid Game will return for a second season later this year.
Season one premiered on the streaming platform back in September 2021 and holds the record as Netflix's most popular series of all time, with over 1.65 billion view hours in the first 28 days of its release.
Now, the company's most popular show ever will make its return on 26 December.
The official description for Season 2 states: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.
"Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."
Not only have we been gifted the exact date that the series' second instalment will grace our screens, we've also been told when the franchise will come to an end.
Season 3 will arrive sometime in 2025, and showrunners have revealed that it will be the final season.
Executive producer of the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, posted a letter to fans in which he wrote in part: "I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story."
The series received 14 Emmy nominations in 2022 with six wins.
Fans have taken to social media to express their delight at the long-awaited news of a new season.
"What a perfect little Christmas gift," one user wrote.
Another commented: "First House of the Dragon, then The Boys, Power Book 2 and now Squid Game.. momma I've been eating good....what a year!"
One other posted: "Can't wait for this! First trailer I have gotten super excited for in a long time."
