Released in cinemas when people were still mostly trying to avoid them, The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent was probably the funniest movie released in 2022, and one of the funniest movies released in the last few years. Thankfully, Netflix has given it a new lease of life.
It stars Nicolas Cage playing… well… Nicolas Cage. He’s down on his luck, in between juicy roles, when his agent tells him that Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal), a very rich man in Majorca, is going to pay him $1 million just to show up to his birthday party.
As mentioned, the movie was a bit of a commercial flop, with the $30 million production making only $29 million worldwide, but with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%, this has the chance of becoming another cult classic in Cage’s back catalogue:
Back in 2023, when Netflix first released the movie to stream, we dug into more of the plot with the following description:
Here are some other reviews for the movie:
New York Post – “It might sound like a gimmick, but it’s as good as any action-comedy you’re likely to see. Cage heightens his already big personality just the right amount to ensure that the film rises above a skit. We care a great deal about fictional Nicolas Cage.”
Indiewire – “Though movie references and Cage quotes abound, there’s something for everyone in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. It’s one of the funniest movies of the year.”
The Playlist – “In The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Cage delivers a crowd-pleasing triumph that reminds audiences that he’s always been – no matter the part, no matter the reviews – a star who makes the movies infinitely better just by being him.”
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is available to watch on Netflix right now.

Initially unsure, Cage soon grows to befriend Javi as they spend more time together, which is exactly when some CIA agents show up and ask Cage to work with them undercover to investigate the origins of Javi’s fortune…
With an incredible supporting cast including Sharon Horgan, Neil Patrick Harris, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz and Demi Moore, this could have been a overly meta, self-referential mess, but instead they landed on something very, very funny.
