With just three episodes to go, Game of Thrones has reset its focus. As Daenerys said in the trailer for the next episode: "We have won The Great War, now we will win The Last War."
The White Walkers may be gone - at least it seems that way but hey, this is Game of Thrones - and while the Night King appears to be gone, it's time for Cersei Lannister to reestablish her credentials as a villain that's unlike any other in the saga.
After all, she did orchestrate her husband's death in a hunting accident, arrest Ned Stark for treason, kill every single one of her enemies in the Sept Baelor, openly wish to have Tyrion killed, manipulate her own brother's trial against him, unleash the Faith Militant, murder Ellaria Sand's own daughter in front of her as an act of revenge, and renege on her promise to send the Lannister troops north to fight the dead.
The Night King will be missed but make no mistake about it, Cersei is evil. She's also the most talented player when it comes to playing the game of thrones.
All things considered, she's a pretty good villain that's going to be very difficult to remove from the Iron Throne. Aside from this, she also has The Golden Company to boost her numbers in the wars to come - shame about those elephants though.
One thing that could work in the Queen's favour though is the uncomfortable situation that's threatening to destroy the relationship between Jon and Daenerys.
In the second episode, Dany learned that Jon is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne and that she has been sleeping with her nephew. Just a tad bit uncomfortable.
Anyway, the next episode is directed by Game of Thrones veteran David Nutter, he directed the season opener Winterfell, but Nutter is more renowned for his work on The Rains of Castamere, better known as The Red Wedding episode.
Yep, we're worried too and Kit Harington's recent remarks to EW might put Game of Thrones fans slightly on edge.
“One of my favourite episodes is four because the characters have seemingly got what they needed. The world is safe now. They’re celebrating and saying goodbye to lost friends. But as an audience you’re going, ‘This is only episode 4, something’s going to happen.’ And that’s the cool thing because I think the characters are aware of this as well. There’s something twisted and uncomfortable about it. It’s so Shakespearian," he said.
King Hamlet. Lady Macbeth. Lear. Romeo and Juliet.
All Shakespeare plays and characters.
Nothing bad ever happened to them, right?
All will be revealed when the next episode of Game of Thrones airs.
