A third season of hit Irish crime drama series Kin is "looking less and less likely", according to a new report.
Co-created by Peter McKenna and Ciarán Donnelly, the show's first season premiered in 2021 - telling the story of the Irish crime family, the Kinsellas (led by Aidan Gillen), as they embark on a gangland war with an international cartel (represented by Ciarán Hinds).
Set in Dublin and also starring the likes of Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne, Danielle Galligan, Emmett Scanlan, Francis Magee, Sam Keeley and Yasmin Seky, Kin was renewed for a second season which premiered in 2023.
Over the course of the two seasons, the series has racked up a large fan base in Ireland and the UK and recently made headlines again when it was added to Netflix.
There was hope that if Kin was enough of a success success on the streaming giant that it would be granted a third batch of episodes.
This is as Bron Studios, the production company behind the series, declared bankruptcy in 2023 – putting the crime drama’s future in major doubt.
However, The Irish Sun is now reporting that a recent development regarding the series "could well be the final nail in the coffin of Kin".
This is that the show's props - which were intended to be used for a third season - are about to be sold off.
An unnamed source told the paper:
“The film company paid for the props from Kin to be held in storage for a limited time, which is now up. Everyone was waiting for a new season to be filmed, but it never happened as the company who made Kin went bust.
“This stuff has been sitting here ever since, so it’s now going to be sold privately. There’s no auction, no website. It’s being sold off discreetly to private buyers.”
The source added that this will cause difficulties for the show regarding continuity, if season three ever comes to pass.
“People who binge watch on box sets will find the Kinsella home looking radically different if they ever make a third season," they explained, before adding: “But that’s looking less and less likely.”
It's worth noting though that another unnamed insider told The Irish Sun that "there is always a way of working around these things".
Meanwhile, the series' star Scanlan said in a This Morning interview earlier this month that there was "a lot of interest" in reviving the show.
The Irish Sun states, however, that a third season of Kin will not happen until the liquidators of Bron Studios find a buyer for the crime drama.
Another insider expressed fear that because “Kin is only a tiny part of Bron’s $700million bankruptcy," it is "probably not a super-priority for the receivers who are trying to sort out what is a mega mess", the report also outlines.
Earlier this year, meanwhile, The Irish Sun claimed that the show was finished for good.
The paper, quoting an interview it did with one of the show’s actors Sinan Sicimoglu and other TV sources, stated that the cancellation was down to Kin’s stars all being out of contract.
Kin season one and two are streaming on Netflix and the BBC iPlayer in the UK now.
