Both Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz have called for a sequel to be made of The Mask.
The 1994 film, loosely based on the comic book series of the same name, created by Mike Richardson and further developed for Dark Horse Comics by Doug Mahnke and John Arcudi, was directed by Chuck Russell.
It starred Jim Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, a lowly bank employee with little to look forward to in life besides going home to his dog, Milo.
After a night out leads him to watching the waves crash in solitude, Stanley discovers an ancient mask which, when worn at night, transforms him into the cartoonish entity known as The Mask.
The Mask became an immediate pop culture sensation, lauded by critics and amassing a whopping $351.6m, all on a budget of less than $23m.
The Mask was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 67th Academy Awards, as well as three Saturn Awards for Best Fantasy Film, Best Costumes, and Best Make-up, while Carrey himself was nominated for a Golden Globe for his dual role as Stanley and The Mask.
In December, Carrey said he'd be open to the idea of reprising Stanley/The Mask if a sequel was to be made of the iconic film. He said he would only reprise the role though if 'somebody had the right idea'.
He said: "It's not really about the money. I joke about the money... But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things... I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting.
"Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just — things tend to change."
Now, Hollywood icon Cameron Diaz has opened up about the prospect of that happening.
Diaz was promoting her latest film Back in Action which marks her return to the silver screen after a decade-long hiatus from Hollywood.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Diaz said: "If Jim's on board, I mean, I've been riding those coattails from day one."
