Here’s why The Alienist could be the next great TV show

The man who created the first season of True Detective is behind this.

Let's get this out of the way. The first season of True Detective was one of those shows that generally excited audiences and reinforced the idea that TV was infinitely better than what's showing at your local cinema. That tracking shot! Dark, edgy and incredibly stylish, Cary Fukunaga and Nic Pizzolatto combined to create one of the greatest debut seasons in TV history. After the duo fell out, the second season of True Detective really suffered as Fukunaga went on to make the Beasts of No Nation. Well, we're happy to see that Fukunaga is involved with a new gothic murder mystery that feels like a combination of True Detective, Sherlock, Zodiac and the macabre mystery surrounding Jack the Ripper. The Alienist is a gothic drama series that's based on the novel of same name by Caleb Carr. The psychological thriller drama is set in 1896, when a series of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes has gripped the city. Newly appointed top cop Teddy Roosevelt calls upon Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a criminal psychologist -- aka alienist -- and newspaper illustrator John Moore to conduct the investigation in secret. Joining them in the probe is Sara Howard, a headstrong secretary at Police Headquarters. The show has amassed a very impressive cast with Daniel Brühl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds, Captain America: Civil War), Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast, The Hobbit) and Dakota Fanning (Man On Fire, The Runaways) all starring.
