Eileen, one of 2023's most sadly underseen movies, is now available to stream through Sky Cinema and NOW Cinema.
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh (My Year of Rest and Relaxation) and directed by William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth), the psychological thriller tells the story of the titular character (played by Thomasin McKenzie, Last Night in Soho) - a young woman working at a youth prison in 1960s Massachusetts.
Living with her widowed and emotionally abusive father (Shea Whigham, Boardwalk Empire), Eileen finds an escape from her daily frustrations through her obsession with the juvenile detention facility's new hire – a glamorous and enigmatic counsellor named Dr. Rebecca St. John (Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway, Interstellar).
As the two women grow closer, however, Rebecca reveals a dark secret – throwing Eileen onto a much more sinister path.
Only earning a limited release in Ireland and the UK last December - the movie's darkly gripping story, its noirish atmosphere and its flawless performances by Hathaway, McKenzie and their co-star Marin Ireland deserve to be enjoyed by a much bigger audience.
Holding an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, here is a sample of some of the glowing reviews Eileen received.
AV Club: "Eileen is a stylish and wild ride that never lets up from its first frame to its shocking finale."
Chicago Sun-Times: "It feels like we’re watching a Todd Haynes film as filtered through the lens of a Hitchcockian tale, with a late-story development that’s bat-bleep crazy but also gripping."
The Hollywood Reporter: "Rippling with sly humor and a bold command of the tropes of classic Hitchcockian suspense, this is a twisty and beguiling original, led by contrasting but expertly synced performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway."
Independent (UK): "The thrill of Eileen lies in how McKenzie plays off the film’s inciting spark, a blonde-bobbed enigma played by Anne Hathaway."
Little White Lies: "An impressively crafted noir that skilfully captures isolation, dread and yearning."
Eileen is streaming in Ireland and the UK via Sky Cinema and NOW Cinema. US readers can watch it on Hulu.
