Directors of arguably the three best episodes of Game of Thrones will return for Season 8

There will probably be blood… and lots of it.

The final season of Game of Thrones is ages away at this point – so far away, in fact, that we haven’t even got a date for it yet – but such is its popularity worldwide that even the tiniest bit of information about it is enough to get fans excited. Earlier this week, for example, there was giddiness surrounding hints that Miguel Sapochnik, the man responsible for two of the most popular episodes of Game of Thrones (according to IMDB), Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter (both Season 6), would be returning for the final season. Not only has that been confirmed in a report by Entertainment Weekly, it’s also been established that David Nutter, the Emmy award-winning director behind the third most popular episode, The Rains of Castamere (Season 3) – better known as the ‘Red Wedding’ – and five other episodes will also be back for Season 8. According to Entertainment Weekly, the task of directing the finale will be left to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who, along with Sapochnik and Nutter, will be responsible for the direction of the six episodes in Season 8. How those episodes will be divided up remains to be seen, but it has been suggested that Sapochnik will direct two, if not three of the episodes, no bad thing considering the quality of his work on the show to date. Production on the show is due to begin next month – preparations, it would seem, have got underway already – but fans remain in the dark as to when the finished product will end up on our screens; it could be as late as 2019. What this latest news almost guarantees is that when it does arrive, it’s going to be well worth the wait.
