The film series is rising from the dead

28 Years Later, which will be a sequel to 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007) and will see Danny Boyle and Alex Garland reunite as director and writer.

According to Deadline, the first film of the proposed new trilogy in the series is "gaining steam" and will star Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes.

Boyle and Garland wrote and directed the original 2002 horror which focused on a man named Jim (Oscar winner Cillian Murphy) awakening from a coma to discover that a highly contagious and aggression-inducing virus has caused the breakdown of British society.

A smash hit critically and commercially, the movie is credited with helping reinvigorate the zombie genre and five years later got a follow-up titled 28 Weeks Later, which focused around different characters.

While there's no sign of Murphy reuniting for the upcoming trilogy sequel, the casting of three incredible actors in Comer, Taylor-Johnson and Fiennes will be bring huge excitement to fans of the film series.

While 28 Years Later will be overseen by Boyle, the follow-up will be helmed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta.

Civil War director Garland is expected to write the entire trilogy.

There has been talk of a third entry in the horror franchise for years and amidst his press tour for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy said he would be would be very interested in reuniting with Boyle and Garland for 28 Years Later.

The actor told The Independent: “I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys [28 Days Later and Sunshine]. In a heartbeat, I would love to work with those guys again.”

In another interview with NME to celebrate the original movie’s 20-year anniversary, Murphy stated the following:

“I think there’s a problem with that, in that I’m 20 years older… But every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it.

"Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me.”
